The Cochrane Review titled "Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation", published in January 2025, evaluates the effectiveness and safety of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in aiding smoking cessation.

  • Effectiveness: High-certainty evidence indicates that nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are more effective than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), such as patches or gum, in helping people quit smoking.

  • Comparison with Non-Nicotine E-Cigarettes: Moderate-certainty evidence suggests that nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective than non-nicotine e-cigarettes for smoking cessation.

  • Safety: The review found no significant increase in serious adverse events among users of nicotine e-cigarettes compared to those using NRT or non-nicotine e-cigarettes.

Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are an effective tool for smoking cessation and are at least as safe as other nicotine replacement methods.
